Retention is always a concern throughout the year. You put a lot of time into recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training your employees. Keeping them on staff helps reduce costs and improve productivity. Here are a few tips to help improve retention in your company this year.

1. It Starts With Onboarding

Some of the very first interactions you have with a new employee are during their onboarding and training. This is when you will be able to make your first impression as an employer, and it is one that lasts. Work to create an exceptional onboarding experience. If you seem unorganized and uninterested, chances are your new hire will be too.

There are a number of ways you can improve candidate experience when it comes to onboarding. First, you can automate paperwork. Have the new hire sign everything digitally before their new day so that you can focus on getting them integrated into the team on their first day. You should also have everything set up and ready to go for them. Connect them with mentors and other coworkers. Give them everything they need to be successful. Then conduct regular check-ins to see how they are doing. All of this should be built into your onboarding plan.

2. Build a Positive Culture

Company culture is everything. You need to work to build a positive work environment and good company culture for your staff. To do this, you need to make certain things a priority within the organization. For instance, staff appreciation and loyalty go hand-in-hand. If you make recognizing the efforts of your staff a priority, you will build a fiercely loyal team. Other candidates will see the positivity in your workplace and want to work there too. Is your team in a slump? Need to regain mojo? Here's how.

3. Provide Development Opportunities

Employees are more likely to stick around if they don’t feel stuck or stagnant in a position. Offering opportunities for them to grow is key to improving retention. Some employers offer upskilling or reskilling, which helps their employees learn new and different skills within the company. You might also consider providing other opportunities, like paid courses or certifications.

If you don’t have much money to put into development opportunities, you can still provide things for your staff. Connect them with industry leaders, inform them about networking events, and find other ways to nourish their careers. It will show them you care.

4. Recruit the Right Team

The biggest piece of the employee retention puzzle is recruiting the right candidates, to begin with. You need to determine what you want in a candidate, construct a good job description, be sure they fit into the culture, and have the experience necessary, among other things. There are a lot of things to consider. It can get to be overwhelming fast.
