Company culture plays an essential role for employees and benefits the company. Among other things, culture creates a better sense of identity. It helps you establish expected norms, boosts retention, and helps you attract the right talent. If you haven’t made a conscious effort to create a company culture, it’s time to rectify that situation. Not only for the reasons above but because it can help you develop a better work environment. Here are a few strategies you can employ.  


1. Establish Your Core Values  

You can’t instill the right company culture until you know what core values you want the company to embody. On some level, you probably know what you want those core values to be. They might be service excellence, teamwork, and accountability. They might be a completely different list. Sit down with your management team and brainstorm if you’re not sure.  

Once you know what they should be, don’t make them a footnote in your onboarding package. They should feature prominently in training, in the office, and any communication with your employees. Reward employees who embody these values with recognition or even the occasional bonus.  


2. Hire Carefully  

While the Coronavirus pandemic will take a toll on employment rates, the unemployment rate is still incredibly low. That makes hiring a serious challenge for companies that might be starved for fresh blood. That being said, it’s always better to wait for the right fit than hire anyone with the right skills on their resume.  

Bad hires erode morale, reduce productivity, and cost you money when you must inevitably replace them. The right fit will be excited about working for your company and already share your core values. These employees slide into the company without many ripples and become an asset.  


3. Support Culture with Shared Experiences  

Shared experiences will vary based on the size of your company. A company with 50 employees can reasonably hold events for every employee. A company with 1000 employees will need to organize smaller events. The underlying point, however, remains the same.   

Shared experiences allow employees to create bonds that extend beyond merely sharing an office or locker room. You can even encourage smaller group activities by subsidizing outings to local restaurants by arranging a group discount.   

Company culture should permeate your employees’ daily experience. Training and communication should extol your core values. Your hiring practices should focus on getting the right culture fit. You can also support the culture by arranging shared experiences.
