  • Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) announced an accelerated start of production, now slated for the fourth quarter of 2024, with the grand opening celebration planned for the first quarter of 2025. This marks a change from the previous announcement, which had indicated production would commence in the first quarter of 2025.
  • Hyundai Motor Group retained its position as the world's third-largest automaker by sales volume in 2023, following Toyota and Volkswagen, marking the second consecutive year in this ranking.
  • On February 24, 2024, reports surfaced indicating that Amazon, Open AI, Microsoft, and Nvidia are investing in the startup Figure AI, known for developing human-like robots. Hyundai Motors acquired Boston Dynamics, a leader in humanoid robots, in June 2021, positioning itself as a key player with the resources and ambition to advance robotics technology.
  • Hyundai's stock surged by 35% in February 2024

Production

On Feb 26 2024, Hyundai Motor Group celebrated "Hyundai Day" at the State Capitol of Georgia, highlighting Hyundai's substantial investments in the state, projected to generate nearly 40,000 jobs and $4.6 billion in annual individual earnings. During the event, Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) announced an accelerated production start in the fourth quarter of 2024, with the grand opening celebration planned for the first quarter of 2025.

Hyundai Motor Group's new Metaplant America in Bryan County, Georgia, is the company's first factory solely dedicated to Electric Vehicle production. This cutting-edge facility features a smart manufacturing system that seamlessly integrates every aspect of the EV production. Through the use of AI and data optimization, all stages of production, including order collection, procurement, logistics, and manufacturing, are efficiently managed. Additionally, this innovative approach fosters a work environment where humans and AI collaborate, ensuring productivity and quality.

Humanoid Robot

With robots assisting human workers, the innovative manufacturing system will also help create a human-centered work environment. Robots are moving to the factory floors and becoming partners that can help do so much more than we can do alone. Hyundai's acquisition of Boston Dynamics in June 2021 has proven to be a wise strategic move. It has positioned Hyundai as a significant player in the robotics field, demonstrating a firm commitment to advancing technology boundaries. Recent reports on February 24, 2024, revealed that major tech giants Amazon, Open AI, Microsoft, and Nvidia announced to invest in Figure AI, which specializes in human-like robots. Additionally, Tesla has been developing its humanoid robot, Optimus, since August 2021, aiming to enhance manufacturing efficiency. Leading tech companies focusing on AI and humanoid robots, further signals that Hyundai is on the right path of innovation strategy and maintain a strong foothold in the industry's future.

Electric Vehicle and Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Focusing on Electric and Hydrogen Vehicles: Hyundai and Genesis presented their range of electric vehicles, including the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, GV60, and Electrified GV70, alongside the hydrogen-powered XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck outside the State Capitol. The XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck is set to facilitate logistics between Hyundai's manufacturing sites and suppliers. Hyundai is actively advancing a hydrogen mobility value chain at HMGMA, announced at CES 2024. Through the Clean Logistics Project, XCIENT Fuel Cell tractors will manage logistics for the plant and its suppliers. Known for its reliability with over 6.25 million miles, XCIENT is Hyundai's commercialized class 8 6x4 fuel cell electric model. Additionally, Hyundai is developing hydrogen refueling infrastructure to support this initiative, aiming to stimulate economic growth and job opportunities within the state. A fuel cell uses the chemical energy of hydrogen or other fuels to cleanly and efficiently produce electricity. If hydrogen is the fuel, the only products are electricity, water, and heat.

Job Creation

The project is set to generate thousands of jobs, including 8,500 direct positions resulting from the investment. Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) is actively recruiting and has partnered with local colleges to establish a talent pipeline for future hires. Through this collaboration, four technical colleges offer the Electric Vehicle Professional Technical Certificate (EVP TCC), providing graduates with priority consideration for positions at HMGMA. Hyundai's investments in Georgia are projected to create nearly 40,000 jobs and generate $4.6 billion in annual earnings. With a $7.59 billion investment, HMGMA will create 8,500 direct jobs, while Hyundai and SK On's $5 billion EV battery cell plant in Bartow County, Georgia will employ 3,500 workers.
